La origine, carnavalul a fost o sărbătoare catolică, ultima înaintea perioadei de meditaţie dinaintea Paştelui. A devenit una dintre cele mai stridente şi mai mari petreceri din lume. Este, în acelaşi timp, şi o competiţie acerbă între şcolile de samba. La defilarea carelor alegorice au participat anul acesta peste 5.000 de dansatori, asistaţi de cei peste 70.000 de spectatori de pe Sambadrom.

Anul trecut, Carnavalul a adus la Rio de Janeiro peste jumătate de milion de turişti.
